How healthy is rope skipping really?
23/09/2021 by Julian Fuchs
Until a few years ago, rope skipping was a niche activity, primarily practiced by children in the schoolyard – but that has changed drastically recently. Today, it's not just martial artists who rely on rope skipping; it's also ideal for the gym or as a home workout. That's because rope skipping is the perfect strength and endurance training that gets the whole body moving.
In addition to endurance, skipping rope particularly improves coordination, jumping power, explosive power, and rhythm. Furthermore, it benefits cognitive abilities and concentration – because you have to pay close attention to ensure the steps and jumps are executed correctly and without stumbling. We at Everjump love skipping rope – it's a fantastic sport that's excellent for weight loss and a lot of fun. In our shop, you'll find a variety of jump ropes for every skill level!
What are the benefits of rope jumping? The most important reasons
No prior experience is necessary to start skipping rope: Anyone who wants to can use it as a great way to improve their fitness or lose weight, even as a beginner. Even advanced athletes can benefit. This is partly because skipping rope is anything but monotonous; it can be very varied. While you don't move forward in the same way as when jogging, you can constantly change your steps and create new challenges for yourself.
Jumping rope is a fantastic and effective cardio workout, or simply a great way to warm up: just 10 minutes is said to burn almost as many calories as half an hour of jogging. Jumping rope engages both body and mind: it boosts fat burning, works your muscles, and improves your concentration. A practical side effect: rope skipping can also enhance performance in other sports, as it specifically improves jumping power and explosiveness. This is particularly beneficial for athletes in sprinting, boxing, or acrobatics. With Everjump ropes, you can train your fitness anywhere you want.
Can you burn fat and build muscle by jumping rope?
Jumping rope not only improves endurance but also strengthens the muscles. Much like running, regular training supports the entire cardiovascular system and thus overall health. Just a few minutes a day, three days a week, are enough to improve fitness and support weight loss.
Jumping with an Everjump rope trains different muscle groups, including the glutes and thigh muscles, the quadriceps and of course the arm muscles.
The muscles are used because they generate the force the body needs to lift off the ground so that the rope can pass under one's feet.
Although the muscles of the lower body are most heavily used, the shoulder and arm muscles—including the biceps, triceps, and forearms—and the abdominal muscles are also engaged. Our core is essential for the overall stability of our body and stabilizes it. Jumping rope is a strength-endurance sport—meaning you first have to build strength and then maintain it for an extended period.
Nevertheless, skipping rope should not be considered a replacement for traditional strength training, but rather serves to define muscles instead of building them. If you still want to build muscle mass, you can increase the intensity of your workout, for example, by using ankle weights or ropes with weights built into the handles. You can also supplement your skipping exercises with strength exercises such as sit-ups, lunges, pull-ups, or squats.
How quickly can you build muscle by jumping rope?
As mentioned before, skipping rope isn't the best way to build muscle mass – however, it can certainly strengthen, tone, and define muscles, as well as help maintain them. But how long does it take to see the first effects? This question is actually difficult to answer definitively.
Muscle strengthening depends not only on the specific exercises performed, but also on physical condition. What is the body fat percentage? What is the BMI? What is the starting weight? All these aspects play a role and naturally influence the effect that can be achieved through rope skipping. The major advantage is that rope skipping with Everjump is a full-body workout that activates almost all muscle groups – unlike other exercises that only train specific areas of the body.
How many calories are burned while jumping rope?
Depending on body weight and intensity, you can burn up to 1,000 calories per hour jumping rope. However, weight loss shouldn't be the primary focus, as building muscle takes time – this also applies to developing balance, coordination, and jumping power. The more practice you have, the more enjoyable the workouts will be. Therefore, it's not easy to give a general answer to how many calories you actually burn in an hour, as it depends on whether you jump quickly or slowly, and whether you jump gently or with momentum. Those who exert themselves more and work up a good sweat will naturally burn more fat.
For whom is rope skipping unsuitable?
Generally speaking, rope skipping is suitable for anyone who enjoys it and is healthy. However, those who frequently suffer from joint and knee problems should be cautious and consult their doctor if in doubt. Rope skipping is a sport that can put considerable strain on the joints – good alternatives include Nordic walking or simply long walks.
What should you look out for when buying a rope?
Anyone looking to buy a jump rope for training can now choose from a wide selection in different lengths, colors, and styles. The simplest models are available from around five euros, but there are also professional models or ropes with weights in the handles, which offer an additional training effect and therefore cost a bit more.
Many manufacturers produce jump ropes with steel cables, which are considered particularly robust and durable. Ropes with smooth-running ball bearings in the handles are highly recommended. However, the jump rope shouldn't be too light, as a bit more weight allows it to swing better. If you already have some experience with the sport and want to increase your number of jumps per minute, then it's worth investing in a professional model. Our high-quality jump ropes from Everjump also offer an advantage for beginners: they are designed to make it easier to find the right rhythm. But we also offer a variety of jump ropes for advanced jumpers, which you can purchase in our online shop.
Tips for rope skipping - how to start training correctly
Before you start skipping rope for the first time, it's advisable to put on well-fitting athletic shoes. Ideally, these should have cushioning in the forefoot – the harder the floor, the more cushioning the shoes should have. Ideally, the floor should also offer some cushioning to minimize stress on your joints. Furthermore, it's recommended to wear loose clothing that doesn't restrict your jumping. Proper technique during training will help you avoid mistakes from the outset.
We at Everjump recommend warming up before starting your workout to prevent injuries. Now, bring your body into an upright position without stiffening. Your upper arms should be close to your body, while your forearms should point diagonally forward. Gather momentum from your wrists, bend your knees slightly, and jump off the balls of your feet, swinging gently upwards.
As a beginner, you can use two different types of jumps: The bounce step involves jumping with both feet simultaneously, incorporating a smaller, springy intermediate jump. The alternate foot step involves alternately landing with your feet on the ground, similar to a jogging motion. You should simply try out which one suits you better during your first few training sessions.
It's extremely important not to go all out right away and to take your time to let your body get used to it. Three to four sessions per week are perfectly sufficient to start with. Depending on your endurance and muscle strength, you can then gradually increase the intensity of your training, allowing you to try out different jumping techniques: with crossed arms, with an intermediate jump, with high knees, or other extras. However, you should always keep your own fitness level in mind – there's no point in overdoing it only to have to stop in the end because you've pushed your body too hard.
